Hitchhiking in Norway: Kvalvika Beach

Free Ferry to go around Lofoten Islands

2nd of October, 2022.

Hitchhiking in Norway.

I am glad I talked with Tony before boarding. There is so many people waiting outside the ferry, either to board or to welcome the ones coming out, that it would take me a long time to get to a less crowded place, and by then, I believe all the cars from the ferry would have left already. There is a big queue of foot passengers to board and, again, many motorhomes and campervans.

Tony is actually from Røst (the farther away island of Lofoten) and he is on holidays, so he decided to spend some time in the Peninsula. How nice is that? Røst is quite small and flat, so for him is a new world here in the Peninsula, with the lovely high mountains. He is a very pleasant person to talk to and we have a good time together, even though is only about half an hour. He then saves my life when he offers to drive me all the way to the beach I want to visit, Kvalvika. It is a short drive from the main road, only about 7 minutes, but for me to walk this distance, with the packs, it would take up to one hour. I am extremely happy that I can save some time.

After the parking lot, there is a up and down hill hike to the beach. I leave The Hulk behind the toilets cabin and start the hike with my small backpack. I was planning to hide The Hulk on the bushes, but there are some people in their campervan at the parking lot, and they can see me, so I just let it behind the toilets. It can be seen if you go around the toilets, or to the lake, but it is not in the middle of nowhere.

It is beautiful around here! The hiking can be a bit tricky at some moments and completely unpredictable. There is a marked trail but sometimes it either disappear or it is difficult to find. And it can go all over the place, in a complex zig-zag, as it is playing with you. There are parts which are more complex because are only in the rocks, and it is up and down all the time. There are quite a few hikers back and forward, which means it is a popular location.

When you finally reach a point where you can see the beach, the view is extraordinary! It is really something! The beach is located in between to huge picks and it is amazing! I can see down there some really good spots for camping, flat grass areas, and I feel so sorry that I cannot camp in there. But I do know it would be a huge challenge to go all this way with The Hulk. And I cannot even imagine how it would be to go back. There are some amazing hikes you can do to the right side of the beach. You will get to the top of the pick and have a splendid view. There is also a famous photo spot there, where you can sit in a rock right at the edge of the cliff, with the beach behind you. If you have the chance, you definitely should do this hike.

Thinking about the time and the weather, I decide not to go all the way down to the beach. I can see the rain is coming so after a few shots I take my way back. It is OK, you cannot always have everything you want and I am happy to, at least, have been here and see this amazing part of the world. On my way back I pass by a couple with their camping gear and I tell them how lucky they are.

The autumn colours around the hike are on their prime! What a beauty! When I come near to the lake where the parking lot is located, the view is spectacular!

I talk with a young couple from China, who are just about to leave the parking lot, and ask for a lift. They are very friendly but they are not going all the way to my next destination, Haukland Beach, but they say they can take me to where they are going anyway, if I want. But I decide to get a direct lift and save some time. It was the right move!
