Hitchhiking in Rwanda: Nyanza

After a few minutes, which seemed much longer due my super thigh spot on the bus, I reach the place. I am the first passenger to leave the bus, which is full, so people need to make room for me to pass. The driver passes me my backpack though the window, luckily. When I am walking and he passes me, he even offer to go a little further but I say I am alright. At least there I knew it would be a place for hitchhiking, and I do not want to take any more risks.

I eat four biscuits and an orange. After a few minutes, a nice man in a pick-up full with four other men, stop and they are going to Butare. In the beginning, I am a little apprehensive but they are very nice people. They drive me not just until Nyanza but until the King’s Palace Museum itself. Wonderful!

Once in there, I explain the whole situation to the responsible for the museum, but they do not let me go inside for free. They do let me make camping over there though. What? Yeah, I know it does not make any sense but it is like this. The manager bring me to see the cows of the King. Beautiful animals with their charming necklaces. There is even one with blue eyes! A warning though: you do not count the cows of the king. Never! It is true.

After making my camping, I spend some time talking with the workers. They are so curious and surprised about my travels.

After they leave, I start to cook my wonderful dinner: stir-fried spinach, carrots and mushrooms, with some cooked oat flakes. When I am still cooking, a lovely lady called Rita, who works here, come back and brings me, from her home, a pillow, a bed linen and a blanket. Can you believe that? What a wonderful and kind woman! I am so touched by her gesture.

In the morning, before I leave, I take some pictures, I finish my biscuits and eat a mango (which I shared with a cleaning man).
